On $10,000 a month: Gumroad $8,390, Payhip $9,491. How we calculate this.
Pick Gumroad if
- many of your buyers live outside the EU, UK, US, and Canada and you want their taxes handled.
- you want buyers to find you through the Discover marketplace and accept the 30% fee on those sales.
- you sell a handful of products a month and want the fewest settings possible.
Pick Payhip if
- you want to keep more of each sale. Its free plan costs half Gumroad's percentage.
- you sell courses, coaching, or memberships alongside downloads.
- you want payments to land in your own Stripe or PayPal account with no payout hold.
Which is cheaper, Gumroad or Payhip?
Payhip is cheaper at every revenue level. On a $20 sale to a US card buyer, Payhip's free plan leaves you $18.12 and Gumroad leaves you $16.62. At $1,000 a month in $25 sales, that is $909 on Payhip against $839 on Gumroad.
Payhip's paid plans widen the gap. Plus at $29 a month cuts the fee to 2%, and Pro at $99 a month cuts it to 0%. Gumroad has no plans, though its direct-sale fee drops to 5% + $0.50 after $20,000 in paid sales in a calendar month. The fee table shows both at every revenue level.
Which handles sales tax better?
Gumroad handles more. It has been merchant of record for all sales since January 1, 2025, so it collects and remits tax worldwide with nothing for you to configure.
Payhip covers the regions most creators sell into. It collects and remits digital EU and UK VAT, US sales tax as a marketplace facilitator since July 1, 2026, and Canadian GST, HST, and PST. Quebec QST and anything else is yours to handle, and you set a tax category on each product.
Which pays out faster?
Payhip pays faster because it never holds your money. Buyers pay into your own Stripe or PayPal account, and Payhip's pricing page says sales are deposited immediately after the transaction completes.
On its weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedules, Gumroad holds sales for at least 7 days and needs a $100 balance. New Gumroad accounts also wait 1 to 3 weeks for review before the first payout. Read the full Gumroad review and Payhip review for details.
